The Chukum

Once upon a time there was Chukum

Origin

Originally from Mexico, it was once used by the Mayans

to create stuccoes and paintings that decorated the pyramids,

and protected drinking water basins against saltpeter.

This technique disappeared for several centuries until its

rediscovered by Mexican architect Salvador Reyes Rios in 1993.

Manufacture
The first step in making Chukum is to harvest the bark of the Harvadia Albicans tree. This bark is then soaked in large holding tanks for three weeks to extract the resin and all its properties. The addition of baking soda is the final step in creating the coating.

Chukum is made from the bark of the Harvadia Albicans tree.
Chukum requires no chemicals either for its design or maintenance. Its production is also highly regulated by the Mexican government, which requires five new trees to be planted every time a tree is deforested.

Properties of Chukum
Chukum is fungicidal but also protects against heat. It helps keep spaces cool and saves energy. Today, Chukum is used as a natural coating for interior and exterior applications: kitchens, facades, ceilings, swimming pools...

Application
Applying Chukum requires a real understanding of how to apply it perfectly. It's essential to pass on your know-how and perfect knowledge of the product.

Pool trends
Chukum is gradually replacing waxed concrete, a widely-used coating that has a number of drawbacks, including toxicity during installation and poor waterproofing.

hukum can be used indoors for floors, walls and ceilings, on furniture or for pool linings, especially when you want the most natural pool possible.

Chukum in swimming pools
Chukum is a natural, eco-responsible coating that is highly stable over time. It is waterproof, fungicidal and insensitive to heat. It is also insensitive to limescale and helps reduce the development of saltpetre and algae.

After applying Chukum to an in-ground pool, you'll need to wait for it to dry completely (around 12 hours) before putting it underwater. This natural pool coating requires no additional protection when immersed in water, and its waterproofing properties will be flawless if left natural. By using Chukum for your pool's interior lining, you'll get the same look as waxed concrete. However, you'll use far fewer maintenance products, making for an environmentally-friendly pool.
